Rohde & Schwarz guarantees ATC voice quality with R&S AVQA
Rohde & Schwarz is taking voice quality in ATC networks to a new level by enhancing the ATC Voice Quality Assurance System (R&S AVQA) with the Radio Signal Strength Information (RSSI) monitoring tool.
On September 14, 2020, at the ATCA Technical Symposium in Munich, Rohde & Schwarz presented a proposal for the introduction of RSSI monitoring in R&S AVQA. In air traffic control (ATC) applications, high-quality voice communication is critical. International standards such as ED-136 and ED-137 stipulate the high availability, security and flexibility that IP-based ATC systems should have, and high-quality voice communications can meet these standards.
Rohde & Schwarz and Voipfuture have jointly developed a professional ATC voice quality assurance system, R&S AVQA, for quality monitoring and troubleshooting of modern Voice over IP (VoIP) networks. R&S AVQA provides long-term monitoring for operational assurance and ED-136 voice quality consistency, as well as fast troubleshooting in the event of problems with air-ground and ground-ground communications. Through this mechanism, there is a clearer mutual understanding between the pilot and the ATC controller.
The R&S AVQA enhancements offered by Rohde & Schwarz are unique on the market. First, the R&S AVQA provides stable passive monitoring of a nationwide radio system without additional infrastructure. Second, RSSI monitoring provides precise time information on signal strength and noise, helping users quickly identify RF interference, antenna and radio hardware issues, and poorly located radio sites. The RSSI monitoring function of the R&S AVQA can be used with any ED-137 compatible radio.
“R&S AVQA from Rohde & Schwarz is an ATC voice quality assurance system that gives Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) a complete picture of the voice quality of their systems,” explains Jindrich Slavik, Product Manager ATC at Rohde & Schwarz “The R&S AVQA has been successfully operated by several users and demonstrated its advantages in an operational test conducted by the Federal Aviation Administration in Atlantic City, USA in May 2019. The system helps to identify and eliminate the Multiple issues in communication systems from different vendors.”
R&S AVQA is part of CERTIUM ANALYSIS in the advanced CERTIUM communication architecture designed to enhance safety, reliability and efficiency for civilian ATC users.
