Do you still remember the concept phone that the OnePlus official account has previously revealed? That’s right, it’s the new machine that claims to use “fading rear camera”. Under strict confidentiality measures, media from all over the world finally witnessed the true face of the OnePlus concept phone during CES 2020 in Las Vegas, USA. This is also the world’s first concept phone that can hide cameras.
As the first concept phone of OnePlus, the phone is named OnePlus Concept One, which can be called Concept One according to Du Niang’s translation. In creating this concept mobile phone, OnePlus also poured absolute resources into craftsmanship and technology.
One plus mobile phone used to manufacture the body with natural materials, leading the development of CMF in mobile phone industrial design. Including OnePlus 1 bamboo back cover, OnePlus 2 aramid fiber OnePlus 6 AG glass. OnePlus Concept One uses leather material, it should be noted that this is the same leather as the McLaren 720S seat, and it is handcrafted. The gap between leather and leather products is still huge, and the grip is completely different. Of course, the cost of the former is much higher than that of the latter.
OnePlus also used the PVD process on the aluminum alloy middle frame for the first time, and plated a layer of real gold on the surface to create a smooth and bright texture. Like the leather back cover, the implementation cost of this process is not low, and it is only a bold attempt on the concept machine at present.
Speaking of which, have you noticed that from the beginning to the present, you have not seen where the rear camera of the OnePlus Concept One is. In fact, the core technical highlight of this concept phone is also here, electrochromic glass replaces traditional glass, thus realizing the concealment of the camera module.
Electrochromic glass is an industrial design, a dramatic solution from traditional CMF to ECMF. E stands for Electronic, and electrochromic glass can show different transparency under different current and voltage. When the camera is turned on to take a picture, the glass becomes transparent; when the camera is turned off, the glass becomes black, which looks like a simple gradient switch.
In fact, this kind of glass material is not unfamiliar to everyone. For example, the portholes of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the sunroof of the McLaren 720S have all used this material. The difference is that the back cover glass of mobile phones is obviously not as thick as aviation glass or car sunroofs. Even the color-changing glass used in high-end apartments is very thick. Coupled with issues such as power consumption and light transmittance, technologies already used in cars such as the McLaren 720S cannot be directly copied to mobile phones.
In order to solve a series of problems, OnePlus spent 18 months to create the thinnest EC Glass, the thinnest electrochromic glass in the world. By reducing the thickness of the combined two pieces of glass, as well as the thickness of the EC material layer, the thickness of the electrochromic glass of OnePlus Concept One is only 0.35 mm.
For this Thinnest EC Glass, the OnePlus Concept One does not confine its functional characteristics only to its appearance. So we got the world’s first smartphone with a built-in physical ND filter.
Filters are also commonly used in photography. They are often used to shoot flowing water and crowds in strong light environments, or to shoot bright scenes such as sunrise or the sky. At present, the OnePlus Concept One is based on Thinnest EC Glass, which can achieve the ND8-level dimming effect. By increasing the concentration, the possibility of linear dimming and higher-grade dimming can not be ruled out.
McLaren 720S has the same leather, real gold PVD process, Thinnest EC Glass electrochromic glass, and ND8 filter. This time, OnePlus has created a concept phone for the first time and brought a lot of hard goods. But what needs to be emphasized with everyone is that the OnePlus Concept One is not a mass-produced model, but an experimental product that is a breakthrough in mobile phone technology. Although the exact mass production time is not known, the successful application of many technologies, especially the electrochromic glass on the OnePlus Concept One, undoubtedly shows more possibilities for the evolution of smartphones.
