The new low-power Socionext SC1220 60GHz series radar sensors detect the position and movement of individuals with very high accuracy and precision. The SC1220 is packaged in an ultra-compact 7 x 7mm package with an average power of only 2.5mW. There are two built-in 2×2 rectangular array antennas for transmission systems, which can detect three-dimensional positioning such as azimuth angle, elevation angle, speed, and distance.

Using the 60GHz frequency for wireless communications has several advantages over competing technologies. For example, the 60GHz frequency has higher signal resolution because it is relatively less crowded and provides more bandwidth than the lower 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies used for Wi-Fi (the full bandwidth between 57 and 64GHz is 7GHz). The high resolution of the 60GHz frequency provides very accurate sensing results, enabling more innovative radar sensing applications such as people counting, vital signs detection, health monitoring, non-contact 3D motion monitoring and gesture control.

Radar sensors are also less susceptible to environmental conditions such as temperature and light fluctuations, making them ideal for a variety of commercial and consumer applications.

Contactless Gesture, Presence and Vital Signs Monitoring Using 60GHz RF Sensor Technology

Socionext 60GHz radar technology can detect motion, presence and vital signs with high accuracy. Device makers across industries are using RF sensors in extraordinary applications that were the stuff of science fiction not so long ago. Here are some examples:

Convenient, safe, and power-efficient presence detection: Sensors for lights and device switches have been around for a while, but as anyone who wags their arms to keep the lights in a room knows, they’re often not very reliable. 60GHz radar sensors can accurately detect the presence of people and reliably turn on lighting, HVAC systems and other equipment when there are people, and save power by turning them off when no one is there.

Activity Monitoring for General Health – Health experts warn of the harmful effects of sitting or overworking. Radar sensors, combined with computers or personal electronics, can monitor the presence of people and provide reminders to take breaks or to get up and move around regularly. Radar-equipped devices can also monitor vital signs and provide similar cues to counteract stress and fatigue, and even provide early warning of certain health emergencies.

For health and wellness applications

Independent Living for the Elderly – The capabilities of radar sensing technology can help the rapidly growing elderly population live more independently and improve the quality of life by monitoring the health of the elderly. Such systems can notify family members and health care providers in the event of a medical emergency.

Touchless equipment operation improves safety and hygiene – the recent COVID-19 pandemic reminds us all of the need to prevent the spread of pathogens. Socionext’s 60GHz radar sensor accurately senses and tracks the position of the human hand in 3D space, making it ideal for touchless device manipulation using gestures. The technology offers a high degree of interactivity without the risk of touching contaminated surfaces. Some examples include playing music apps, searching for information at video kiosks, and purchasing items from vending machines.

Reassure Parents with Next-Generation Baby Monitors Physical and environmental factors can contribute to Sudden Sleep Death Syndrome (SIDS) in infants. The unique sensing capabilities of the 60GHz radar give parents greater peace of mind by monitoring and warning of breathing and heart rate issues, giving parents a complete picture of their child’s health. Combined with video capabilities, these systems allow parents to fully monitor their baby in the crib without disturbing the child’s sleep.

Patient monitoring in hospital or at home – 60GHz radar sensors from Socionext can detect subtle body surface movements and monitor vital signs to assess patient health. Medical monitoring devices equipped with these RF sensors can help identify individuals at risk and automatically send abnormal vital sign data to medical professionals who can quickly determine actions needed to protect a patient’s health, thereby saving people’s lives.
